The next project on my queue is my lavender houndsooth jacket. I wanted to take a minute a share a technique I used to match the lines in the fabric so that it lines up in the completed garment. The results so far have brought great joy!!
It's pretty simple. First I laid the fabric entirely flat without folding it. For the front panels I the cut the pattern out on one side, flipped it and on the same line cut the other side. Right beside the front pattern, I laid the back pattern. To maintain continuity across the back, I lined up the pattern by matching the notches of the front and back peices across the fabric. Since the back should have been cut on the fold, I cut around around top, left and bottom - flipped the pattern to the right - then cut the bottom right and top.
Here is what it looks like roughly sewn together:

Looks very good!
Looks perfect! Thanks for the tip.
Actually, this is my first time visiting and reading your blog. You're current houndstooth project is looking good. It's also good to meet someone who works in NYC as well. What's your favorite fabric store in the city? (It's Mode Fabrics for me thus)
First time leaving a commenting, I love your blog, you have skillz!
Thanks for adding the pic of the outline of the cut fabric, it adds visually to your great tip of lining up plaid.
Jacket looks good so far! Did you interface the fronts?

Thanks for visiting nieghbor! Mood is my number 1. But I have to flirt with the guys so they cut a lil extra fabric on my "one yard" lol.

I sure did interface the front but on the facing, not the outter layer. Although I will say, I took the seam allowance off the interfacing to reduce bulk at the seam because the fabric is really heavy.
Cindy - I love the fabric you choose for the jacket and skirt combo. It is also nice to meet someone else who works in the financial arena...though I work on 57th Street on the west side. I have two favorite fabric stores in the district - Metro Textiles and Parons.
I would really like to meet you!...Kashi will stay late at Metro Textiles one evening if you'd like to meet there...let me know...cnorman_98@yahoo.com
Wow your jacket is looking good! Can't wait to see it finished!
I just came across your blog, I work in the stock market as well and love to do crafts on nights and weekends, my logic is the job allows me to buy the craft supplies! Lovely work on the jacket.
